Activities of the Conrad Weiser Unit are driven by a sincere appreciation for the American democracy which we are privileged to enjoy and by a deep respect for the values nurtured in our Germanic heritage. Monthly meetings are held in Ridgewood, New York to discuss matters of interest; to plan civic action; to schedule social and cultural activities ... all in a spirit of gemutlicheit.

Achievements are witnessed in different areas of interest.

Annual Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest

Our crowning accomplishment may be our Annual Oktoberfest whose objective is to enjoy the cultural experience while sharing it with a broad audience. Oktoberfest enjoys corporate, local and individual support and serves as our primary fundraiser. The phenomenon continues to expand every year and now demands a larger venue.

Our civic action also includes collaboration with neighborhood associations as well as participation in events such as Memorial Day Parades. Unit members were particularly proud to be able to assist:

  • the FDNY and the NYPD Steuben Associations after the September 11, 2001 attack on the United States;
  • the Fallen Heroes Fund in building a rehabilitation facility at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas;
  • the victims of Hurricane Katrina through a contribution to the Salvation Army;
  • the material needs of families through support for local food pantries;
  • educational efforts by providing trophies and treats for student accomplishments.

To highlight on a grand scale the significance of the Germanic contribution in shaping American society, the Conrad Weiser unit proudly marches in the German-American Steuben Day Parade on Fifth Avenue each September. In 2003 Esther Carpenter, daughter of a Unit member, was chosen Parade Princess; and in 2006 Jaime Lartin, daughter of another Unit member, served as Junior Princess.
